Soaring to New Heights
Thursday, June 9, 2011
For first year camper Kenneth Lee Avery, the sky is truly the limit. After attending the San Diego Football Camp last summer (this summer the camp will be headlined by Antoine Cason), Avery lead his team, the California City High School Ravens, with 65 tackles, which ranked him third in the entire league. With aspirations to pursue his ultimate goal of becoming a pilot, as well as playing collegiate football, Avery is showing others the importance of having big dreams. A dual threat at the middle linebacker and fullback positions, Avery says coming to camp greatly increased his already formidable football intelligence. "I learned to increase my skills by filling gaps and running the ball to my full potential," said Avery. He also said that his attendance at the additional specialty clinic "helped me upgrade my basic skills on attacking and gather new tactics, which helped me increase my knowledge of the game and made me better."
While Avery said that he had made several friends at camp he keeps in touch with, his focus was on the instruction from the Sports International Football Camp coaches. The obvious attention to details paid off when he received the prestigious award certificate for the Gridiron Elite at the end of camp. Other campers can aspire to achieve this award from San Diego Chargers player Antoine Cason, who will be leading the San Diego football camp, July 6th -9th at San Diego State University, and the Norwalk football camp, July 12th -13th at John Glenn High School this summer. Avery said that his favorite part of camp was meeting the San Diego Chargers players. With the high caliber NFL athletes and the six hours of instruction that individuals receive daily, it is no surprise that campers are often awestruck. Sports International's coaches strive to make each camper's time valuable towards their football learning as well as encouraging them through difficulties. As Avery said, getting tips from these NFL players was, "Amazing-it's like nothing I've ever experienced." Already looking into colleges that offer Aviation Flight Operations as well as football, Avery knows what he wants for the future. But for now, Avery can be satisfied after leading a football team that came back from a winless year to several wins and even receiving off-field accolades, such as being elected as Homecoming King by his senior class peers. When asked if he would be back for future camps, Avery replied with a definitive, "yes." "I want to thank everyone at the Sports International Football Camp for helping me upgrade my skills and knowledge as a football player. I have taken each piece of advice and used it to the best of my ability. As a result I have become a better player. The camp has provided me with so many role models and I am truly grateful I was able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to attend this camp." SI wishes him the best of luck in the future and looks forward to seeing him again!
